City of Stone Mountain plans participation in National Day of Service

Stone Mountain, GA – On Monday, January 20 residents and concerned citizens of Stone Mountain Village are encouraged to participate in the National Day of Service from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. The project for the day will be cleaning up a historic cemetery in the Shermantown section of the Village. The cemetery has become overgrown with trees and foliage. The Shermantown Cemetery is located at 5510 Stillhouse Road in Stone Mountain.

“We would like to spend a few hours honoring the message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr by working together as a community to clean up this historic resting place,” explain Steve Wells, member of the Stone Mountain City Council.

Participants are encouraged to bring gloves, clippers and water. Boots are also recommended.

The City of Stone Mountain is located at the base of Stone Mountain, the largest exposed granite dome in North America. The city was founded in 1839 and currently has over 6000 residents. The city is known for its historic and walkable village center and its growing art scene.
